For many students, business finance is a boring topic. In their minds, it offers very little new information and seems to be another way for teachers to encourage students to develop their math skills. But there is more to business finance than balancing the ledger. Finding creative ways to teach a boring topic may be just what your students need to find a new career goal.
Incorporate Print Media
Magazines such as “BusinessWeek” provide an inside view of the business world. While this is helpful, you also need to consider the format for the articles. Students will pay more attention to an article if they are able to scan it to get the main points. Look for magazines that break up text with headings, bullet points, numbered lists, and graphics.
Also, look for magazines that feature young entrepreneurs. Students often feel that they have little choice in life, but learning about another teenager or young adult who has started a successful company may be just the inspiration your students need.
Take Advantage of Blogs
There are many financial experts offering business advice through blogs. Giving your students the opportunity to interact with experts through blogs can inspire them to learn about the industry. Plus, they’ll be getting up-to-date information on business finance from many of the people who will write next year’s text books. Blogs can be a beneficial means for any sort of information, they can range in topic from financing and stock trading to sat prep and college applications. Connecting with people who have been there and done not only offers the right paths to take, but the strategies and ways in which to approach certain things.
Find Interviews
You may have business professionals in your local area who would be willing to come and share their personal stories with your class. If not, you can look for video and audio interviews of business professionals online.
Make Information Relevant
Regardless of the media you incorporate, you must relate the information to the topic you’re teaching. Sometimes, this will require a bit of creativity on your part. The bottom line is you want to involve students in learning so they understand the benefits of business finance education.
