Taking Alternative Courses

Some people have posited that notion that if you want to get anywhere with your education, you have got to focus a lot into a specific area.  In a lot of cases, academia seems to have gotten into the concept that the more specialized a student becomes, the better they are going to do.  While becoming highly specialized is a great way to gain traction in your career life, while you are in school it can actually be to your detriment to become too specialized into a specific field and area of study.  After all, there is an awful lot to know in this world, and it is very unlikely that you will ever know all of it.

A course of study is only as good as what it teaches you.  And no course of study is ever going to be complete in and of itself.  So while you might end up being a very good professional at one tiny little field, you are ultimately going to end up being less of a well rounded person if you do not switch up your course work a little bit.

The courses that you take are ultimately going to help you out, not so much through jamming a bunch of different facts into your head, but through how they are going to expose you to different thoughts and opinions.  In a lot of ways, we live in a world in which there is no objective reality.  We simply have to behave as if there were such a thing, so that we can stay sane.  So the more alternative courses you take, the more viewpoints you will be exposed to, and the better educated you will ultimately be.
